Depression can be a hidden ailment

I saw this today on someone’s Facebook status in my network: “YOU DON’T LOOK SICK! No, I don’t. It’s hard to explain to someone when they have no clue. It’s a daily struggle feeling sick on the inside while you look fine on the outside. Please put this as your status for at least 1 hour if you or someone you know has an invisible illness (Anxiety, Bi-Polar, thyroid P.T.S.D., LUPUS, Fibromyalga, Crohns, Diabetes, Arthritis, I.B.S. , Epilepsy, MS, Depression, etc).”

It was pretty poignant and made me stop to think about this for a moment. One by one, I started seeing others in my network comply or comment on this wall posting. I began to wonder just how of my friends/colleagues are struggling with a so called invisible illness. Of course, depending on the severity and exacerbation of symptoms, mental illness can indeed be visible. And not only can it be visible, it can affect more than just the person experiencing the illness, trickling on to their family, friends and co-workers. Just ask the child of mom who can’t attend a school play due to anxiety disorder or the wife of a husband who is stood up for the millionth time at the company Christmas party because of depression. That said, there are many people who ‘put on a happy face’, and much to their inner struggle, will still saunter on to life’s obligations. But is that what life is all about? Should going to a school play be out of obligation, fraught by any emotional baggage outside of just some good ole jitters for your kid? No way! And this is why getting help is so important.

“I got help, but it isn’t working!”

Does this sound like something you are muttering at the moment? I’m going to focus on depression for today’s post. Are you taking an antidepressant, but still experiencing depression related symptoms? Are you curious if there is something additional that may relieve your lingering symptoms? If so, you may be like one of the millions of Americans who suffer from depression, and are taking an antidepressant, but still lack energy or have unresolved symptoms. There may be additional treatment options to consider. If you’re taking medication every day, but fret about having to get out of bed or are still emotionally debilitated enough to where you can’t enjoy life – then something is not working. Keep searching for a regimen that makes a positive difference. Do not give up. I repeat; do not give up. Like anything else in life, there is not a one size fits all solution. On behalf of yourself – be a health advocate! Do it with tenacity and hope.

One option? There are clinical trials for investigational medication to be taken along with your current antidepressant to see if it helps lessen any remaining depression symptoms. If you qualify, you will receive investigational study medication, study-related medical exams, and lab tests at no charge. Additionally, you may receive reimbursement for your current antidepressant prescription. Insurance is not necessary and you may be reimbursed for your time and travel.
